Lake Arrowhead Visitors Guide: Q&A with Jo Gartin of Love, Luck, and Angels

Lake Arrowhead is an idyllic lakefront town nestled amongst the San Bernardino Mountains, just a short drive from Los Angeles. A perfect weekend getaway destination, the “Alps of Southern California” has something for everyone. If you’re staying in a lakefront home, you’ll have access to the private waters and can spend your days fishing or taking ski lessons. The Alpine-inspired Lake Arrowhead Village offers seasonal events like concerts in the summer and Oktoberfest in the fall. Aside from shopping and dining, Lake Arrowhead has quick access to several beautiful hiking trails to enjoy the serene surroundings.

If you’re thinking about planning a trip, or considering investing in lakefront real estate, here is your guide from Lake Arrowhead aficionado Jo Gartin to everything you need to know about your favorite mountain retreat!

Q&A

Q: What drew you to buying a home in Lake Arrowhead?
A: This house unexpectedly crossed our path and we fell in love instantly. Lakeside location, unique architecture, a turreted wooden ceiling and 20-foot stone walled double fireplace made it a done deal. It’s a rare treat to be able to live right on a lake, especially in California. I feel very lucky to have spent time here.

Q: What is your perfect day in Lake Arrowhead?
A: Morning cup of tea on our deck followed by a walk along the private lake trail with my pup. Hanging out on our dock, a swim in the lake, sunset kayaking, dinner fireside, and movie/game night. Oh, and there is a hike 15 minutes away to Canyon Hot Springs – a challenging but gorgeous adventure.

In the winter, replace swimming with snow skiing and tubing! Snow Valley Ski Resort is 25 minutes away and has easy in-and-out fun runs.

Q: Best time of year to visit Lake Arrowhead?
A: All year! Springtime is sprinkled with fresh blooms and dogwood branches. Summer is divine with fishing and swimming off our dock. Fall is crisp and littered with perfect leaves and the snowy winters are magical.

Q: Most fun things to do?
A: RELAX and enjoy the calmness of the lake.

Q: Best restaurants?
A: There are several fun little eateries around town but I cook as we never want to leave our house!

Q: Favorite stores?
A: My teen kids love thrifting at the shops in Cedar Glen and Blue Jay. There are some great antique stores too. Wander around Cedar Glen and enjoy the historic shopping, dining, and nature. The wildflower florist Wildflowers at the Lake has lovely things, too!

Q: Closest farmers market?
A: Market veggies up at Kuffel Canyon on the weekend or Running Springs Farmers Market and Artisan Faire for more variety.
